about us

Sport

England has a great sporting heritage, and there is nothing better to boost the nation's 'feel good' factor than when our sports professionals excel in their fields.

To succeed and excel in sport we need to ensure we encourage, nurture and develop our sporting talent. This can only be done through having the best coaches, referees, stewards and support staff, both qualified and equipped with the right skills. This is where the National Skills Academy plays its vital role in the industry - providing easy access to these qualifications and skills through a coherent and innovative approach to training provision.

The sport industry incorporates the day to day running of amateur and professional sports clubs, as well as the provision of sporting activities across a variety of environments. This brings with it a great number of career paths, including:

  • coaching
  • officiating
  • sports development
  • administration
  • sports or leisure facility management

With a workforce of 621,000 people in paid employment throughout the UK, working across 40,000 organisations spread across the public, private and voluntary sectors, a career in sport and recreation can be both diverse and rewarding.

National Governing Bodies

Each sport is regulated by its own authority, which are collectively known as National Governing Bodies. These bodies are responsible for the provision of the rules and regulations governing their respective sports and represent their sports at a national and international level. To find out more visit the National Governing Bodies in sport pages.
